The Road To 2012 NYC Marathon – Summary of T-2 Week
Week 15 of training – a simple 3, 5, 3, 8. Felt kind of lazy to be honest. I ripped through my 5 mile mid-week. The three milers on the treadmill were, well short! The 8 miler was a little tough, but that’s because a) I was bit bloated from a big dinner the night before for a family birthday and b) it was kind of windy out, and the first 3 miles seemed to be entirely uphill and against the wind. Once I got to 3.5 mark it eased up.
Next week’s T-1 summary will be posted on Saturday! Cause we all know what happens on Sunday!

The Road To 2012 NYC Marathon – Summary of T-3 Week
Week 14 of training – a simple 5, 8, 5, 9. Nothing in double digits. That said that last 18 miler from last week must have really wiped me out. I struggled quite a bit with the 5, 8, 5 runs – needing a lot more breaks than usual. I did the 18 miler with short breaks at 5, 10 and 15. This week on the mid-week 8 I was taking breaks after 3 and and a few more after that. Same with treadmill 5’s, needed to take breathers and slow down – which I haven’t had to do on the short runs in forever. Either the 18 miler was more taxing than I thought or my initial paces were too high. Finally back into the groove on the 9 miler on Sunday. Break after 5 and pretty much straight through to end.
Next week looks almost lazy – 3, 5, 3, and 8….

The Road To 2012 NYC Marathon – Summary of T-4 Week
Week 13 of training – final week of really long runs – 5, 8, 5, 18. Or so the plan said. I completely missed my second 5 miler due to cold and work. Woke up Friday and was not going anywhere initially since breathing was a challenge and I ached everywhere. I would have gone later once I was feeling at least semi-decent, but work interfered.
In the end, the day off helped tho – I racked up a great pace on my 18 miler. And I was kind of in the mood for it too (knowing it was my last training 18 miler helped too), especially compared to last week‘s not in the mood.. All in all, my final long run was my fastest. Pretty pleased.
Especially since I forgot my various knee straps. I was initially panicked about it since it was my last 18 miler from the last shot at the program is where I hurt my knee in the first place. I also think I learned a bit more about why that happened since it was a little close this time too (thankfully, I’m a stronger runner now). Like the last time I did my final 18 miler, I did my extensions loops both at the beginning of the run (my trail is about 14 miles so I need to run a little extension either at end / beginning or both to get it to 16 or 18 miles), instead of one at beginning and one at end (like last week). This pushes some pretty steep hills a few more miles later into the run – around the 10 – 13 mile mark instead of the 8-11 mark. I could definitely feel the difference. I took it a little easier on those sections and made it through.
Next two weeks are taper weeks before the final week.

The Road To 2012 NYC Marathon – Summary of T-5 Week
Week 12 of training – final week of 5, 8, 5, 18 was the plan. I mentioned yesterday that I was actually at a conference last week in San Francisco. Despite a lot of failure on the food side, I did pretty well on the training side. I got my first 5 in (tho the treadmill at the hotel died on me on the final quarter mile – close enough), and I got my 8 miler in (lovely outdoor run along the bay of S.F.). The final 5 miler was missed due to some poor planning on my part (I forgot to factor in packing time). However, later that day I got some free time in and got a 9 mile walk in, so I count it as a reasonable substitute, but won’t count it towards my mileage.
Then back home on Sunday got my 18 miler in. Was .. not .. feeling it. Not sure if it was the change in weather (back to long pants/sleeves) or the jet-lag but was not physically or mentally in the mood to run. Did it anyway. Took me about 2 minutes longer than my last 18 miler in June. Considering weather I should have been faster this week, but I can tell I wasn’t on game – not a single sub-8 mile, and I usually clock at least the first 2 at sub-8. That said I did it. Only one more 18 miler to go!
In other exciting news, based on current trends, that final training run in the final week is going to pop me over the 1,000 miles run marker (RunKeeper already has me over 1k, but it is including stationary bike and swimming and walking distances).
