T-4: Final Big One

Week four was the last big week.  And man I’m glad.  My calves and glutes were killing me going up the hills.  Who’s ready for tapering?  This guy.  18 miler was my slowest by far.

We’re up to the big ones.  One down one to go.  Was my slowest 18 miler, but only a few minutes off in total.  Given how out of whack my schedule and sleeping are (I was awake 24 hours on Friday), I will take it.  I’ll also take a little slowdown for my knee feeling ok after it (yea knee straps).  And that I feel like a cold is coming on.

According to RunKeeper, I hit 2,000 miles running this week.  Most of it was in training for these marathons, but some of it was just general cardio.

Things I can say for sure – getting two good nights sleep and not running 5 miles the night before certainly help the long run.  Not a particularly good mid-range run (two nights of no sleep and running at 11pm at night is not going to help that!).  But the long run was the boost of confidence I needed.  New third best run 16 miler ever, felt no bad coming into those final two miles.  Distance is a touch shy as some guy started asking me some questions about where I run and get mileage during my cool down walk and so I went a lot slower than I normally do during that 5 minutes.

On an separate note, for the last two weeks I have seen another runner that ought to inspire you.  He’s an amputee with a spring-blade on one leg.  Pretty inspiring by itself but it gets better.  I guess those things only come in one size, and the spring-blade is longer than his full leg.  So he’s got a mini-blade attached to his shoe.  Watching him run, you can tell the heights are not perfect and he’s uneven from a body weight perspective too, so it looks pretty awkward all-around.  But he plugs away.  Good for him.

Reverse of last week.  Awesome mid-range run, great pace.  Horrible 16 miler on Sunday.  Wound up running my last short run late Saturday evening.  Big mistake.  Even taking it easy, starting a 16 miler 12 hours later, not a lot left in the tank.  First 8 miles wasn’t shabby, second 8 miles was horrific and involved a fair bit of walking.
